hernias characterized as either direct or indirect. Indirect hernias protrude through the lateral inguinal fossa and are thought to be due to the presence of a vaginal process (in men) or diverticulum of Nuck (in women) (
Fig.1). Direct hernias protrude from either the supravesical fossa or the medial inguinal fossa (
Fig.2). Femoral hernias (
Fig.3) and obturator hernias are also by definition direct hernias.
