Hamartoma, hepatic

(also called lymphangioma, cystic hamartoma, bile cell fibroadenoma and von Meyenburgh complex), a rare cystic liver tumour from mesenchymal origin, occurring primarily in young children but occasionally also seen in adults. A congenital origin is assumed. The tumour probably originates from the primitive connective tissue in the portal tracts. The lesions are well circumscribed but nonencapsulated and average 16 cm in diameter. The tumour is composed of a disorganized mixture of cysts, bile ducts, vessels and connective tissue and usually increases rapidly in size.

The ultrasonographic and CT appearance is that of a solid mass containing multiple cysts or of a multicystic septated large mass. Also, see hamartoma hepatic.
