Musculoskeletal ImagingTransverse process
a
projection on either side of of the vertebra extending laterally from the junction between the lamina and the pedicle.
Fractures of the transverse process result from lateral flexion extension or sometimes from a direct blow; alternatively, they may be seen in association with a Malgaigne fracture of the pelvis. These ruptures tend to occur in the absence of other vertebral fractures, although multiple transverse processes often are involved (Fig.1). Isolated fractures of the pedicles may be related to trauma or represent fatigue fractures caused by repetitive stress. Isolated fractures of the lateral mass or transverse process of the atlas are rare.
