Shigella

an enteric Gram-negative bacillus that causes acute bacillary dysentery. This infection may be followed by a noninfectious polyarthritis characterized by soft tissue swelling, osteoporosis and septic arthritis. This arthritis may be associated with Reiters syndrome and the presence of HLA B27 antigen. Reactive arthritis also occurs after some Shigella infections.
