Musculoskeletal ImagingRetrocalcaneal bursitis
inflammation of the bursa located between the Achilles
tendon and the posterior surface of the calcaneus.
In rheumatoid arthritis, this condition is characterized by a fluctuating mass that falls to the sides of the Achilles tendon. Swelling of the tendon and of the preachilles fat pad is common on radiographs. In some cases erosion of the posterosuperior aspect of the calcaneus may be evident. Findings in the seronegative spondyloarthropathy are sometimes virtually indistinguishable from those of rheumatoid arthritis.
