a nerve branching from the tibial nerve and supplying the muscles of the sole and toes.
2. Pathology
Enlargement of the plantar nerve may occur in macrodystrophia lipomatosa, owing to infiltration of the nerve sheath by fibroadipose tissue.
An entrapment neuropathy may occur when the plantar nerve becomes compressed as a result of injury near the transverse intertarsal ligament. The plantar nerve may also become compressed in patients with hypothyroidism, producing a similar entrapment neuropathy.
