Pin

a type of device used in internal fracture fixation of fractures. A pin is thinner than a nail or rod but is thicker than a wire. Among the types of pins are the Knowles, Rush and Steinmann pins. Rush pins are round in cross section with a hooked end; this design helps prevent distal pin migration and aids in extraction. Steinmann pins may be used to hold a tension band in place and provide rotational stability.

Complications occurring after insertion of pins include splitting of the bone shaft, inability to advance or withdraw the pin, fracture and infection, such as a pinhole ring sequestrum. In some cases, injury at the time of pin insertion leads to formation of a zone of osteosclerosis without formation of a sequestrum.
