Musculoskeletal Imaging

Osteopoikilosis

an asymptomatic osteosclerotic dysplasia that may either be inherited or occur sporadically. Some patients exhibit fibrocollagenous infiltrations, keloids, and scleroderma-like lesions. Radiographically, small, well-defined, ovoid foci of increased radiodensity are observed clustered in periarticular regions of bone (Fig.1). The epiphyses and metaphyses of long and short tubular bones, carpus, tarsus, pelvis and scapulae are sites affected most commonly. Possibly a relationship exists between this condition and other osteosclerotic skeletal disorders, especially osteopathia striata and melorheostosis, a combination of abnormalities that has been termed mixed sclerosing bone dystrophy.
