osteoblast, which becomes trapped within lacunae during the process of bone formation or
ossification. Osteocytes send out branches through interconnected canaliculi and function in maintenance of the bone matrix through transport of nutrients and fluid. Osteocytes retain some ability to synthesize bone matrix.
