Ortolani manoeuvre

a method for diagnosing developmental dysplasia of the hip DDH in the neonatal period. This clinical test is used to assess proximal femoral reduction into the acetabulum by progressive abduction of the hip. The Barlow manoeuvre is the reverse of the Ortolani manoeuvre, that is the proximal portion of the femur is displaced by progressive adduction. Both of these tests generally are positive for only a few days after birth, perhaps explaining the prevalence of late diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip that exists among infants who are found to be normal in the neonatal period.
