Howship's lacuna

(John Howship, 1781 - 1841, English surgeon), a scalloped cavity of bone undergoing resorption (see resorption of bone) or remodelling, also termed a resorption pit. Within the lacunae are embedded the bone resorbing cells, the osteoclasts.
