Flatfoot

a condition in which one or more of the arches of the foot have fallen. This condition is also termed pes planus deformity or pes planovalgus. Flexible flatfoot deformity is characterized by heel valgus, forefoot abduction and increase in the talocalcaneal angle on anteroposterior radiographs. This condition is not associated with equinus deformity, and the navicular bone remains in normal position in relation to the talus. Peroneal spastic flatfoot is frequently associated with tarsal coalition.

Flatfoot deformity also may be a component of Ehlers Danlos syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital vertical talus and osteogenesis imperfecta. In addition it may follow injury to the tibialis posterior tendon.
