Compton scattering

(Arthur Holly Compton, 1892 - 1962, American physicist), the deflection of incident photons through their interacting with electrons (either free or orbital) that are of much lower energy than the photons. The displacement of electrons causes loss of energy by the photons and deviation from their original paths. See Compton scattering.

Compton scattering has been employed in bone mineral analysis to help measure the density of bone mineral per voxel or gram/cm3; determining the ratio of Compton scattering to coherent scattering when a tissue is bombarded by ionizing radiation defines bone mineral density.
