Cretinism

a chronic disorder caused by a congenital defect of thyroid secretion leading to mental retardation and skeletal abnormalities. Infants with cretinism have delayed bone maturation, particularly absence of the distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyses (Fig.1). Thyroid deficiency in older children leads to juvenile myxoedema.
