congenital defect of
thyroid secretion leading to mental retardation and skeletal abnormalities. Infants with cretinism have delayed bone maturation, particularly absence of the distal femoral and proximal tibial epiphyses (
Fig.1).
Thyroid deficiency in older children leads to juvenile
myxoedema.
