constriction of the vertebral body centrally, probably after incomplete fusion of two chondral centres with hypoplasia at the junctional site (
Fig.1). Butterfly vertebra can result from a developmental abnormality leading to regression of the cauda dorsalis and formation of
sagittal clefts in the vertebral body. A funnel-like defect divides the vertebra into right and left halves. Alternatively, a similar appearance can be seen in spinal
trauma.
