a sheet or a flattened, ribbon-like structure composed of dense collagen fibers and associated with the tendinous attachments of muscle. The fibres are arranged in several layers with the fasciculi in one layer running parallel but in a different direction from the fasciculi in other layers. An example is the plantar aponeurosis, which may be involved by
fasciitis (
Fig.1) or
fibromatosis (
Fig.2).

Sagittal T2-weighted MR image of the foot demonstrates increased signal intensity surrounding the plantar aponeurosis (at the plantar aspect of the calcaneus) owing to the presence of plantar fascitis.
