Musculoskeletal ImagingAndersson lesions
foci of bone destruction occurring throughout the discovertebral junction in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. These lesions may be classified into three types:
localized central lesions, which are covered by cartilaginous endplate;
localized peripheral lesions, not covered by cartilaginous endplate; and
extensive central and peripheral lesions.
Schmorls nodes are commonly present in patients with Andersson lesions. Radiographs reveal irregularities of bone outline and areas of sclerosis. In patients with type 2 lesions there is striking resemblance to the abnormalities seen in senile kyphosis. The weakening of the spine resulting from these lesions may make the patient susceptible to fractures resembling the Chance fracture or seat-belt injury.
