Normal AnatomyRetroduodenal artery
also known as the posterior superior pancreaticoduodenal
artery, first branch of the
gastroduodenal artery. Arises 1 - 2 cm from the latter's origin above the
duodenum and
pancreatic head and gives rise to the blood supply to the common duct. It descends along the left side of the
common bile duct, crosses its supraduodenal portion anteriorly (occasionally posteriorly), and then runs along its right side. At about the middle portion of the posterior surface of the
pancreatic head it anastomoses with the posterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal
artery and gives rise to the
supraduodenal artery of Wilkie in 50% of individuals. See
