Relaxation

process by which an excited or high energy state returns to the ground state. The emission of characteristic radiation or of an Auger electron by an excited atom are examples of relaxation. In nuclear magnetic resonance NMR relaxation relates to the process by which the longitudinal magnetization Mz and the transverse magnetization Mxy reach their equilibrium values. These are longitudinal relaxation and transverse relaxation, respectively (see T1 relaxation and T2 relaxation).
