Potential energy

energy of an object in a physical state in relation to another object. A free electron has a potential energy relative to a bound electron which ranges from electron volt eV to keV and the potential energy between nuclear states can range into tens of MeV. In classical mechanics the potential energy of an object is given by its weight times its height relative to a reference level.
