Gamma counting

process by which the intensity of a flux of gamma rays is measured or imaged. Gamma rays interact with matter through photoelectric absorption, Compton scattering, and pair production. Detectors to count gamma rays utilize one or more of these processes to convert the gamma ray into secondary electrons, and then to stop the secondary electrons so that the full energy can be used to contribute to the output signal.
