Autotransformer

a device which is used to control the kVp of a traditional X ray generator. This is done using either a 1:1 transformer or a transformer with a single combined primary/secondary coil. The line voltage is (commonly) reduced using a movable contact on the secondary/combined coil. An autotransformer is not needed in a modern high- or medium frequency generator, where the kVp is controlled by adjusting the frequency of the voltage fed into the high voltage transformer.
