Thrombin

Enzyme converting fibrinogen to fibrin. Thrombin is generated when prothrombin is activated, and is a crucial enzyme in haemostasis and thrombosis. Contrast media with high chemotoxicity may inhibit the activation of thrombin as well as the thrombin effect on fibrinogen. This may cause uncontrolled inhibition of the clotting mechanism. Non-ionic contrast media have a very low chemotoxicity and do not affect thrombin significantly.
