Platelet

Specialised blood cell, also called thrombocyte, normally with a concentration of 150-400,000 platelets per mm3 (microl). Important part of the haemostatic mechanism in the creation of a clot or thrombus. Platelets adhering to each other - platelet plugs - are the first stage of the haemostasis. Platelets constitute a major part of an arterial thrombus. Drugs may inhibit platelet aggregation (Acetylsalicylic acid, "aspirin")) or increase it (ionic contrast media like diatrizoate and ioxaglate). Modern, non-ionic contrast media have virtually no effect on platelet aggregation.
