Fibrinolysis
Breakdown of fibrin. This is an important mechanism to avoid uncontrolled clotting/thrombosis. Inhibition of fibrinolysis increases the risk of a thrombus evolving to a stage where it is a life threatening problem. Inhibition of fibrinolysis can be a sign of chemotoxicity. Ionic contrast media, low osmolar as well as high osmolar, have a relatively strong tendency to inhibit fibrinolysis in vitro while non-ionic contrast media affect fibrinolysis much less.
