Erythrocyte

Red blood cell whose main function is the transport of oxygen and CO2. Normally 4-5 million erythrocytes per microliter. Erythrocytes can be trapped in a fibrinclot, but will not take an active part in the clotting process. Erythrocytes attract each other slightly. This attraction will lead to Rouleaux formation in slow-flowing or non-flowing blood. Larger erythrocyte aggregates may form if blood is mixed with non-ionic fluids like isotonic glucose solutions or non-ionic contrast media. These aggregates are easily dispersed and have no clinical implications.
