Atherosclerosis

Disease where blood vessels become narrowed because of deposits (plaque) of fatty compounds, cholesterol, fibrin, calcium and abnormal cell growth. Atherosclerosis leads to reduced blood supply to many vital organs and may result in disturbances of the function of organs affected. It may also lead to increased hert work and blood pressure to overcome the reduced capacity of the blood vessels. If plaque material becomes dislodged it may follow the blood stream until it reaches a too narrow vessel (embolise) and thus cut off the blood supply to an organ or body part (infarction), including such severe conditions as myocardial infarction and stroke.
