T1 contamination artifact in 3D Time-of Flight MRA

T1 contamination artifact in 3D TOF MRA, 1.5 T.

Fig. 1 The sagittal MIP reconstruction of the left common carotid artery bifurcation from a 3D TOF acquisition data set (above) shows the presence of intravascular signal in the region of the carotid bifurcation simulating flow and suggesting patency (arrow). However, analysis of the individual source images at the same level (below) reveals the presence of an intraluminal thrombus (arrow), containing essentially short T1 methemoglobin and therefore remaining visible on both the source and MIP images.
