Fibromuscular dysplasia

Fibromuscular dysplasia of the cervical arteries, 1.5 T
This 52 year old female presented with a history of recent transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
An initial Doppler ultrasound examination revealed bruits and turbulent flow within the carotid arteries. Subsequent MRA of the cervical arteries showed the typical appearance of fibromuscular dysplasia. The diagnosis was felt to be confident enough, obviating further investigations, and therefore DSA was not performed.

Fig. 1. MIP reconstructions of the cervical arteries in different projections from a 3D TOF MRA data set, acquired with the TONE option and high-resolution matrix, shows wall irregularities of both extracranial internal carotid arteries and the right vertebral artery, consistent with the diagnosis of fibromuscular dysplasia.
