Head and neck
Head and neck in this context cover facial bones (including paranasal sinuses), glandular tissues (including thyroid, parethyroids and salivary glands) and various soft tissues. The anatomy in this region is quite complex, and interpretation in diagnostic imaging is very challenging in many ways. CT has been widely used for tumour detection and in precise examination of the paranasal sinuses. MRI and PET are nowadays the state of the art in tumour imaging. Ultrasound and nuclear scans are still useful tools in thyroid imaging. Ultrasound can also detect mass lesions in other structures including enlarged lymph glands and can be used as a guide for biopsy.
