E-learningDiffuse thyroid uptake
18F-FDG PET/CT
F23
Malignant melanoma.
Indication PET: Restaging.
Chronic thyroiditis. Hypothyroidism (on thyroxin).
FDG PET/CT shows mild, diffusethyroid uptake consistent with chronic thyroiditis.
Teaching point:
Diffuse increased thyroid uptake indicates chronic thyroiditis (best seen on MIP). FT4 and TSH should be measured unless known thyroid disease. The uptake may be very intense in Hashimoto´s thyroiditis. When very intense uptake primary thyroid lymphoma and anaplstic thyroid carcinoma should be ruled out.
