Société de Neurochirurgie de Langue Française, 45è Congrès annuel, Angers 12-15 juin 1994.
In 1994, the Société de Neurochirurgie de Langue Française commissioned two neurosurgeons, Prof. G. Fischer from the Université de Lyon, France and Prof. J. Brotchi from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium to present a report on intramedullary tumors. The neuroradiological departments of these universities contributed to this publication, as well as the departments of neuropathology. Numerous members of the Société de Neurochirurgie de Langue Française also contributed to the epidemiological data. In fact, it was this work that initiated the creation of this CD-ROM: many of the statistical data provided are based on this report (ref. 1 - image 1).

This CD-ROM is part of the educational CD-ROM program on Imaging of the Central Nervous System (CNS) of the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR).
Its purpose is to teach the techniques and interpretation of CNS studies and eventually to elaborate a standard reference for the study of Imaging in neuroradiology.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is widely accepted as the diagnostic modality of choice in the study of patients with neurological symptoms. In the study of brain tumors, the high sensitivity to pathological change, the exquisite anatomic detail, the absence of artifacts from bone and the possibility of multiplanar imaging are the main advantages of MRI over other existing imaging modalities. The purpose of this volume is to provide a teaching file as well as reference examples of most types of brain tumors and to illustrate the possibilities of MRI in the differential diagnosis. The illustrative and interactive capacities of CD-ROM are maximally exploited.
Over 2000 high quality images from about 200 patients were selected. The majority of brain tumors are illustrated with the exception of tumors of the sellar region, tumors of the skull base and some rare tumors of the cranial nerves, that are the subject of separate CD-ROMs in this series. Both typical and atypical cases are discussed. In most instances both MRI and CT images are available for correlation. For each patient the clinical history and findings on neurological examination are reported. The most typical histological findings are illustrated. Gross pathology of brain tumors is demonstrated on autopsy specimens. Video sequences of operative findings allow correlation with the MR images. A comprehensive text summarizes the typical microscopic, pathological and radiological findings of brain tumors. Information on the clinical presentation, examination technique, indications for surgery and radiotherapy and prognosis of brain tumors is also available.
The structure of the CD-ROM allows for rapid acquisition of basic and advanced knowledge on the typical radiological findings of brain tumors, with easy navigation between images, text, video sequences and the bibliography.
The authors express the hope that the users of this CD-ROM of MRI of brain tumors will enjoy this study as much as they enjoyed creating it.
